The Murray Method

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the Murray Method?
The Murray Method is a therapeutic approach that explores family systems and generational patterns to understand how your early relationships shape thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.  Many of the ways we cope, respond to stress, or relate to others are influenced by family dynamics – often without conscious awareness.

2. How does the Murray Method work?
Through guided exploration and reflective exercises, we identify recurring family and relational patterns. You learn how these patterns influence your current relationships, self-image, and emotional regulation.

Once patterns are understood, you can work toward interrupting unhealthy cycles, developing new coping strategies, and fostering healthier relationships – with yourself and others.

3. Is the Murray Method suitable for trauma?
Yes. While the Murray Method is not exclusively a trauma-focused approach, it is highly effective for uncovering how early relational experiences contribute to emotional wounds, attachment issues, and behavioral patterns.

Many clients find that understanding their family-of-origin dynamics provides clarity and relief, even before more trauma-specific work (like EMDR) begins.

4. Will I need to talk about my family in detail?
You only share what you feel comfortable exploring.  The Murray Method emphasizes insight and understanding over detailed storytelling.

We focus on patterns and their impact rather than labeling or judging family members.  The goal is self-awareness and empowerment, not blame.

5. How long does work with the Murray Method take?
The duration depends on the complexity of your family patterns and your goals. Some clients gain insight in a few sessions; others benefit from longer-term exploration, especially when patterns have influenced multiple areas of life over time.

Therapy is conducted according to your readiness and comfort level.

6. What issues can the Murray Method help with?
The Murray Method is especially helpful for:

  • Repeating relationship difficulties

  • Patterns of emotional reactivity or avoidance

  • Attachment and intimacy challenges

  • Family-of-origin conflicts

  • Self-sabotaging habits

  • Identity and boundary concerns

It is effective for anyone seeking greater self-understanding, emotional clarity, and healthier relational patterns.

7. How is it different from other therapies?
Unlike some therapies that focus solely on symptoms, the Murray Method explores why patterns exist, not just how to change behaviors.  By addressing root causes in family systems, change is often deeper and more enduring.
