Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is EMDR?
EMDR is a therapy designed to help your brain heal from experiences that felt overwhelming, frightening, or emotionally painful.

Sometimes trauma doesn’t stay in the past – it lives in your body. EMDR helps your nervous system finally process what it didn’t get the change to process at the time.

  2. What does EMDR feel like?
    EMDR is focused but gentle.
You briefly bring a memory to mind while following bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements or tapping).  As your brain processes, thoughts, emotions, or physical sensations may shift naturally.
You remain in control the entire time.  You can pause whenever needed.

  3. Will I have to relive everything?
No. You will not be forced to relive traumatic experiences in graphic detail.  We approach memories gradually and only after building emotional safety and grounding skills.
Healing should feel supported – not re-traumatizing.

  4. What if I feel overwhelmed?
    Your safety comes first.
Before processing begins, we strengthen your ability to regulate difficult emotions.  If anything feels too intense, we slow down, return to stabilization, and adjust the pace.
EMDR is never about pushing through – it is about healing wisely.

  5. How long does it take?
    Every nervous system is different.
Some people experience significant relief from single-incident trauma in a relatively short time.
Others who carry developmental or attachment wounds may need longer-term support. Healing unfolds at a pace that respects your history.

  6. How do I know if EMDR is right for me?
If you understand your pain intellectually but still feel triggered emotionally…

If you’ve talked about your trauma but it still feels raw…

If certain memories carry shame, fear, or intensity that hasn’t softened…

EMDR may help your brain finally resolve what talk therapy alone could not.
